Breast Pumps Explained: Manual, Electric and Choosing by Use

BabyProduct Team · 31 May 2026

Manual pumps for occasional use

A manual pump is inexpensive, quiet, needs no power and packs small. It is a sensible choice if you express now and then — to leave a bottle for someone else, or to relieve fullness.

It is hand-tiring for regular sessions. If you expect to pump daily, look at electric options.

Single electric for regular use

A single electric pump handles daily expressing comfortably and costs less than a double. The trade-off is time: one side at a time roughly doubles each session.

Double electric for returning to work

If you are expressing several times a day around a job, a double pump is the one that makes the routine survivable. Both sides at once roughly halves session time, and many parents find output is better.

Look at how many parts need washing and sterilising each time — that, more than the pump price, is what makes daily use sustainable or miserable.

Flange size is the comfort variable

Most discomfort comes from a badly sized flange, not from suction strength. Sizes vary between people and are not one-size-fits-all despite what comes in the box.

Pumping should never be painful. If it is, change the flange size or the suction setting, and ask a lactation consultant if it continues.

Storing what you express

Label every container with the date. Refrigerate promptly, freeze what you will not use soon, and thaw in the fridge or under cool running water rather than in a microwave, which heats unevenly and can scald.

Follow your local health guidance for exact storage times, and when in doubt, discard.
