How Many Baby Clothes Do You Actually Need?

Start with your laundry rhythm
Everything depends on how often you wash. Washing daily, six to eight bodysuits and six sleepsuits per size is plenty. Washing twice a week, aim for ten to twelve of each.
Newborns get through two to four outfits a day in the early weeks. Build for the messy days, not the calm ones.
Buy little in newborn size
Many babies are through the newborn size in two to four weeks, and some skip it entirely. Four to six items is usually enough.
Gifts overwhelmingly arrive in newborn and 0–3 months. Buy the sizes above instead — you will need them and nobody else buys them.
A practical per-size list
Per size, most families find they want: 8 bodysuits, 6 sleepsuits, 2–3 cardigans or jackets, 4–6 pairs of socks, 2 hats, and a few separates once your baby is sitting and crawling.
Add a couple of extra bodysuits during weaning and teething — both are messy phases.
Buy ahead in the right season
A baby born in October will hit 6–9 months in an Indian summer. Sizing is by age, so check what the weather will be doing when your baby reaches that size rather than buying warm clothes for a size they will wear in April.
This is the most common and most expensive sizing mistake.
Prioritise ease of dressing
Envelope necks, poppers down the front and full-length leg openings matter far more than they sound at 3 a.m. Anything that has to go over a floppy head will be worn less.
Wash everything before first use, and stick to soft, breathable cotton for anything against the skin.
