Premature Babies: Clothing, Nappies and Gentle Products

Your medical team leads
Premature babies vary enormously in their needs, and the guidance you receive from your neonatal team is specific to your child. Nothing here replaces it — treat this as practical shopping context only.
Ask them before introducing any new product, particularly anything applied to the skin.
Clothing that works around equipment
Look for wide envelope necks, front openings and generous poppers. Clothing that opens flat is far easier when there are monitor leads or feeding tubes to work around.
Preterm sizes exist below newborn and are worth buying in small quantities — babies pass through them quickly.
Nappies in very small sizes
Most major brands make a preterm or micro size below newborn. Buy a small quantity at a time: your baby will outgrow them fast, and it is hard to predict when.
Check the fit around the legs carefully, since the usual weight guides are at their least reliable at the smallest sizes.
Skin needs the plainest products
Premature skin is thinner and more permeable. Fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient products are the sensible default, and plain water is often preferred in the earliest weeks.
Confirm anything you intend to use with your neonatal team first.
Adjusted age changes the milestones
Development is usually tracked from the due date rather than the birth date. A baby born two months early is often compared against a two-month-younger timeline.
This affects when milestones are expected and sometimes when solids are introduced. Follow the timeline your paediatrician gives you rather than a general chart.
