Wash and dry completely first
Store anything with a stain and the stain sets permanently — milk and food marks that are invisible now turn brown over months. Wash everything, treat marks properly, and make sure it is bone dry before it goes away.
Damp fabric in a sealed box is how you get mildew, and mildew is how a whole box gets thrown out.
Sort by size, label clearly
Pack by size rather than by season or type, and label the outside of each box. In two years you will want '6–9 months' in one place, not to open five boxes looking for it.
Note the season the size will fall in if you already know a second baby is coming.
Containers that suit the climate
Breathable cotton storage bags suit a dry climate. In a humid one, a sealed plastic box with a couple of silica gel packets protects better.
Keep boxes off the floor and away from outside walls, which are the damp spots in most Indian homes. Check them once after the monsoon.
Be honest about what to keep
Keep the things in genuinely good condition and the few items with real sentimental value. Stretched necklines, thinning knees and set-in stains will not improve in storage.
Storage space costs something too. A smaller, better box is more useful than a large indiscriminate one.
Passing them on well
Clothes in good condition are welcome at many shelters, hospitals and community groups, and among friends and family. Wash them, fold them and be straightforward about the condition.
Anything too worn to pass on still has a life as cleaning cloths, which is better than landfill.
